Pakistan Railways traces its origins to 1861 when the first railway line opened between Karachi and Kotri under the Scinde Railway. Many of today's station buildings — including Lahore Junction, Karachi City, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar Cantonment — were built during the British colonial era between 1880 and 1910 and are recognised heritage structures. The network expanded steadily through the 20th century to its current size of 7,791 km with over 700 passenger stations across all four provinces.

Connects Punjab's industrial capital Faisalabad to Lahore — 130 km with 10+ daily trains. Key stations: Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sangla Hill, Faisalabad Junction. One of Pakistan's highest-frequency short-haul routes.
The Attock–Khyber section connecting Rawalpindi to Peshawar via Attock City and Nowshera. Served by through trains from Karachi including the Khyber Mail and Awam Express.
Urban rail loop within Karachi connecting Karachi Cantt, Wazir Mansion, Karachi City, SITE, Orangi, Landhi. KCR revival is in progress in 2026 with partial route operational on the city's eastern corridor.
The northernmost point of Pakistan Railways at Havelian, KPK — 50 km from Attock. Served by the Hazara Express from Karachi. Plans for Havelian to Abbottabad extension have been discussed but not yet implemented.
Large junction stations like Lahore Junction, Karachi Cantonment, Rawalpindi, and Multan Cantonment offer comprehensive passenger facilities: reservation offices (open daily), waiting rooms (separate for women and men), food courts and restaurants, left luggage lockers, ATMs and mobile payment points, taxi and auto-rickshaw stands outside, and accessible ramps at newer platform upgrades.
Smaller intermediate stations typically have a booking counter, basic waiting area, and a tea stall. Flag stations may have no permanent staff — passengers board by flagging the train, and tickets are issued on board.
